Village
Vilafranca del Penedès is the capital of the comarca of Alt Penedès, in the province of Barcelona (Catalonia), 54 km from the Catalan capital. It has 42,607 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is known for its sparkling wines, cava, and for the wines of the Penedès denomination of origin. Its origins go back to the 12th century, from which it preserves medieval buildings such as the Basilica of Santa Maria, the Convent of Sant Francesc, the Royal Palace and the Baltà and Maçà palaces. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries numerous Modernista buildings were also erected along its ramblas, including the façade of the Town Hall. In the historic centre, visitors can see the Vilafranca Museum, which includes the Wine Museum and explains the cava-making process and its relationship with the town.

The Palau Reial of Vilafranca del Penedès, on the Plaça de Jaume I, is listed as a cultural asset of national interest and is today the main seat of the Vinseum, the museum of the wine cultures of Catalonia. It was a residence of the kings of the House of Barcelona in the 13th century: already documented in 1209, in 1236 James I granted it to his castellan Fructià de Palau, with the obligation to house the king and his successors. King Peter the Great died there on 11 November 1285, as the chronicler Ramon Muntaner recounts, commemorated by a plaque on the facade since 1907. In 1308 it was acquired by the monastery of Santes Creus, which turned it into a Cistercian procuratorship; after the friars' exclaustration in 1820 it passed into private hands until, in 1936, it was bought by the Museu de Vilafranca association.

The Palau Baltà, also called Palau del Fraret or Can Babau, stands in the historic centre of Vilafranca del Penedès, with three facades onto the Plaça de Jaume I and the streets of la Torre and Escudellers, where the town's castle once stood. It retains a courtyard with staircases now roofed over, a Gothic window and a gallery of pointed arches. In 1750 it passed to Ramon de Sarriera and later became an inn, until in 1859 it was acquired by Josep Baltà, from whom it took its name. Since 1977 its ground floor has housed the Fòrum Baltà auditorium. Declared a cultural asset of national interest in 1988.

Historical milestone
Manuel Milà i Fontanals was born in Vilafranca del Penedès on 4 May 1818 and died in the same town on 16 July 1884. A philologist, scholar and writer, he is regarded as one of the driving forces of the Renaixença thanks to his role in restoring the Jocs Florals and in the field of spelling, and he is held to be a key figure in the historical development of Catalan grammar, of which he was one of the first dialectologists. A professor in Barcelona and teacher of Menéndez Pelayo, he compiled the Catalan ballad tradition and studied troubadour poetry, thereby giving the Renaixença a scholarly foundation. The philologist Jaume Riera i Sans attributed to him the forgery of the novel Curial e Güelfa, passing it off as a genuine 15th-century text, an accusation that was later shown to be false.

The coca garlanda is a sweet typical of the Penedès, shaped like a tortell topped with matafaluga soaked in anise and sugar, traditionally eaten as an Easter mona. Besides in Vilafranca, it is made in other villages of the Alt Penedès, the Baix Penedès, southern Anoia and northern Baix Llobregat; the Santa Fe del Penedès variety, about 20 centimetres in diameter, is distinguished by following an entirely handmade process, without industrial machinery. In Vilafranca, the local workshops keep it as a characteristic item of the comarca's traditional pastry-making, tied to the town's festive calendar.
