Mare Ràfols Residence Monument · Vilafranca del Penedès, Alt Penedès, Barcelona An isolated monumental complex in Vilafranca del Penedès formed by the convent and church of the Mare de Déu del Pilar, whose foundation stone was laid in 1931; the church and part of the building were opened in 1936. The convent, rectangular in plan with a basement, ground floor and two upper floors, a front porch and an Arabic-tile roof, is the work of the architect Josep Alemany i Juvé, of symmetrical composition and an eclecticist idiom using brick; it has since undergone renovations and extensions. The church, an unfinished start of a monumental building with a dome and lantern, was designed by Josep Maria Sagnier i Vidal-Ribas; the model of his design is preserved in the house where Mare Ràfols was born. Protected as a Bien Cultural de Interés Local (local-level cultural heritage protection status) since 2004. Photo: Enfo (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Vilafranca del Penedès
