Church of Sant Joan Baptista de Vilafranca Monument · Vilafranca del Penedès, Alt Penedès, Barcelona A chapel on Plaça de Sant Joan, on the corner of Carrer de la Indústria, in Vilafranca del Penedès, founded in 1307 when the Commandery of the Hospitallers moved to the town. It is a Gothic building with a single rectangular nave, a two-pitched timber frame over pointed diaphragm arches and a polygonal apse of six sides; the façade has a round-arched doorway in the Romanesque tradition, a circular rose window and the octagonal bell tower to the left. It preserves a Gothic holy-water font bearing a shield of three bars and another, Romanesque, one in white marble with the figure of an angel, from the former oratory of the castle of Sant Joan de Pontons. It preserves a thirteenth-century bell, cracked and mute. The bell tower was built in 1583, and in 1929, under Jeroni Martorell, the brick dome was replaced by the present eight-opening tower.
