Market of la Carn de Vilafranca Activity · Vilafranca del Penedès, Alt Penedès, Barcelona The Mercat de la Carn stands on Plaça de l'Oli in Vilafranca del Penedès, on the corner of Plaça de la Vall del Castell, on the site where in 1754 there was a grape-marc pressing works and, from 1816, the Teatre Vell, a municipal theatre with room for about eight hundred people, demolished in 1873. The market was built in 1882, restoring to the square the space the theatre had occupied. It is a public building sharing party walls, single-storeyed under an Arabic-tile roof, with segmental-arched windows and round-arched entrance doorways; the composition is symmetrical and eclecticist, built in exposed brick. It is listed as a Bien Cultural de Interés Local (local-level cultural heritage protection status). Photo: MARIA ROSA FERRE ✿ (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Vilafranca del Penedès
