Baltà Palace Monument · Vilafranca del Penedès, Alt Penedès, Barcelona The Palau Baltà, also called Palau del Fraret or Can Babau, stands in the historic centre of Vilafranca del Penedès, with three facades onto the Plaça de Jaume I and the streets of la Torre and Escudellers, where the town's castle once stood. It is a Gothic stone palace built by Francesc Babau after 1308; its main facade, with two side towers and an off-centre arched doorway, was unified in 1522 when it was extended with neighbouring houses. It retains a courtyard with staircases now roofed over, a Gothic window and a gallery of pointed arches. In 1750 it passed to Ramon de Sarriera and later became an inn, until in 1859 it was acquired by Josep Baltà, from whom it took its name. Since 1977 its ground floor has housed the Fòrum Baltà auditorium. Declared a cultural asset of national interest in 1988.
