What to see and do in Vilobí del Penedès

Vilobí del Penedès
Village
Vilobí del Penedès is a small municipality in the Alt Penedès comarca, in the province of Barcelona, situated at an altitude of 286 metres, with three settlements: Bellver, les Guixeres and Vilobí itself. The place name, first documented in the 12th century, may come from the Latin vila blanca, after a gypsum mound already exploited in Roman times, or from villa albina, the country house of a certain Albí, the latter hypothesis being the more widely accepted. From the 12th century it was separated from the castle of Sant Martí and in the 14th century it came under the Pia Almoina of Barcelona Cathedral, whose canons were lords of Vilobí until the disappearance of feudalism in the 19th century. In 1842 it incorporated the territory of Vallformosa and since 1846 it has been an independent municipality. It now has 1,154 inhabitants.
Park of els Talls
Nature
A natural area in the municipality of Vilobí del Penedès (Alt Penedès), also known as els Pèlags, formed from old gypsum quarries whose working dates back to Roman times and continued until 1993. When extraction ceased, four crescent-shaped lakes formed, created by the build-up of run-off water. In a small space four distinct environments coexist: rock outcrops, woodland, farmland and water, which favours a distinctive fauna and flora, with numerous bird species, several of them protected. The site stands out for its scenic, ecological and geological value, and is a good spot for hiking around the municipality.
