What to see and do in La Granada

La Granada
Village
La Granada is a wine-growing municipality of Alt Penedès, in the province of Barcelona, among the smallest and most densely populated in the comarca, with 2,287 inhabitants and 6.42 km², at 272 metres above sea level. In Roman times it was a crossing point of the Via Augusta, Via Mercadera and Via Francisca and the centre of the oldest market in Penedès, moved to Vilafranca in 1148. Its castle, recorded since the 10th century, was destroyed in 1003 and rebuilt shortly afterwards, until Philip V demolished it during the War of the Spanish Succession; today its walled remains survive in the old quarter, next to the church of Sant Cristòfol, which reused materials from the castle. The main feast takes place in the second week of July, and in October the Must Festival includes hoisting a donkey up the bell tower.
Castle of la Granada
Monument
A 13th-century Romanesque castle, granted in the year 950 by the bishop of Barcelona, Guilarà, to Sisovald, and again documented in 1193 in the hands of the Cervelló family; Philip V ordered its destruction after the War of the Spanish Succession, and in 1937 its north and east walls were demolished. It retains its south and west walls, about 7 metres high.
House of the Castlà
Monument
A fortified manor house from the 15th and 16th centuries, in La Granada, in the Alt Penedès, which takes its name from the castlà, the feudal administrator of the town's castle. Set between party walls, it consists of a ground floor, upper floor and attic, with a voussoired entrance doorway and a main-floor window framed by stone jambs, sills and lintels decorated with mouldings, corbels and figurative elements. Declared an asset of national cultural interest in 1988.
