Convent of Sant Francesc Monument · Vilafranca del Penedès, Alt Penedès, Barcelona Former Franciscan convent of Vilafranca del Penedès, protected as a cultural asset of local interest, situated outside the old town wall, west of the Rambla de Sant Francesc, on Carrer de Sant Pere. The Gothic church of Sant Francesc and the cloister are preserved, housing numerous medieval tombs -of the Penyafort, Bartomeu, Hug de Cervelló and Pere d'Avinyó families, among others- which have been turned into a lapidary museum of great artistic interest. The building became a hospital in 1835, and part of it went on to function as the District Hospital. James I held courts there in 1217 and Peter the Ceremonious in 1353; it was acquired in 1308 by the monastery of Santes Creus. The medieval wall that surrounded it was demolished in the first half of the 19th century. Photo: Enric (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Vilafranca del Penedès
