Santa Margarida i els Monjos
Village
Santa Margarida i els Monjos is a municipality in the Alt Penedès comarca, in the province of Barcelona, the most populous after Vilafranca in the comarca, crossed by the Foix river, which receives within the municipal area the Maçana stream and the Bruixa stream. The existence of the church of Santa Margarita is presumed as early as 978, although it is not documented as a parish until 1126; it belonged to the royal jurisdiction until John I sold it in 1381, and it returned to the crown in 1642. The settlement of Els Monjos, today the main one in the municipality, arose around a flour mill that the monastery of Santes Creus obtained in 1322 through an exchange with the Pia Almoina of Barcelona. With 7,806 inhabitants (2025), the official Catalan place name was adopted in 1984.
