Town Hall of Vilafranca Monument · Vilafranca del Penedès, Alt Penedès, Barcelona The Casa de la Vila of Vilafranca del Penedès, on the square of the same name, next to the Palau Macià, is a building sharing party walls of Gothic origin, probably the former palace of Bernat Pellicer in the fourteenth century, which the town council acquired in 1559 and renovated in 1604. The side façade preserves Gothic windows and gargoyles carved as eagles with folded wings, through which rainwater runs off, while the main façade, facing the square, is in an academicist Modernisme style of 1912, the work of the architect Eugeni Campllonch. Inside, with a covered courtyard and a staircase of round arches, is preserved the so-called Sala de Sant Ramon or dels Canaris, with murals by Pau Boada i Mercader that combine polychrome painting and sgraffito and depict the town's market, the grape harvest and its walled precinct. A 1965 restoration brought to light Gothic elements hidden in the side façade. Photo: Cornelia Bohl Smolders (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Vilafranca del Penedès
