Village
Artesa de Segre is a town in the comarca of la Noguera, in the province of Lleida, with 3,559 inhabitants (INE 2025) and an extensive district formed by the successive incorporation of numerous former municipalities and settlements, Alentorn, Montmagastre, Vernet, Tudela del Segre and others, between 1857 and 1975, which explains the extraordinary number of termenat castles it preserves and the variety of local festivals that each settlement still celebrates separately. Its district holds the Antona rock art site, discovered in 1976, with schematic red-coloured paintings around 6,500 years old, of the same type as those of Alòs de Balaguer or el Cogul, declared World Heritage Sites by Unesco in 1998. It is also home to the Fira del Montsec.
Monument
Castle of Muslim origin, today popularly known as "el Castellot", of which only vestiges remain atop the Turó de Sant Jordi; it had three towers, which inspired the municipality's current coat of arms. Between 1018 and 1026 Count Ramon Berenguer I ceded it to Ermengol II d'Urgell.
Monument
La Granja d'Artesa de Segre is a plateresque building from the 16th century, built in 1548 by the monks of Montserrat, who had dominated the town since 1510, as the abbot's residence during his visits and the seat of tax collection; it was known as the Casa Nova. It is a freestanding building with a quadrangular plan, with an entrance courtyard and a central courtyard, which retains from its original fabric the great voussoired gateway of the main façade and three plateresque balconies, now gone, of which only traces remain on the wall. After the disentailment of 1835 it passed into private hands, and in 1902 it was acquired by the Maluquer family, who lived there until 1960, when, despite its declaration as a bien de interés nacional in 1949, they sold it for renovation; it was converted into rental housing.
Monument
The castle of the Vall d'Ariet stands in the depopulated hamlet of the same name, north of the municipal term of Artesa de Segre, on the eastern slope of the sierra of Sant Mamet. It belonged to the Meià family. The Vall d'Ariet was an independent municipality until the mid-19th century, when it was merged into Baldomar, which was added to Artesa de Segre in 1926. Next to the castle the Romanesque church of Sant Bartomeu is also preserved.
Monument
The castle of Comiols, in the municipal term of Artesa de Segre (Noguera), is declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It was built to control the village, its term and the pass of the coll de Comiols, and to link with the castles of the Segre plain, starting with that of Montmagastre. Of the fortification, the lower level of the main tower survives, circular in plan, 5 to 6 metres high, with an internal diameter of 4.2 metres and walls 1.6 metres thick, covered by a dome of slabs arranged in circles. The walls combine small ashlars and others somewhat larger, well aligned and bonded with lime mortar; two arrow slits opened at the main level. Towards the 11th century the tower would have been two or three times its current height.
Monument
Complex formed by the castle and the church of Sant Miquel de Montmagastre, in the municipal term of Artesa de Segre, documented since the year 1003 and conquered around 1015-1016 during the Reconquest. It played a prominent role in the formation of the county of Urgell; Arnau Mir de Tost bequeathed it in 1071 and it later passed to the Cabrera family. Today only ruins remain: the foundations, a cistern and the church of Sant Miquel, in Romanesque style, with a slender bell tower and an apse of notable height. On its interior walls medieval graffiti are preserved depicting a mail gauntlet, an eagle, a lance and a crown. Several points of the complex are at risk of collapse, although the bell tower and apse remain standing.
Monument
Remains of the castle of Vilves, in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Artesa de Segre, located on the left bank of the river Segre, next to the canal of Urgel. Of the old castle, now within private property, only the tower survives, of an almost square plan and about 10 metres high after being cut down in the early 20th century, visible from the street. It belonged to the viscounty of Áger as a stronghold dependent on the castle of Artesa; in 1131 viscount Guerau II de Cabrera left it as inheritance to his son together with the castles of Comiols, Collfred and Anya. In 1532 the monastery of Montserrat bought Vilves and Collfred, and retained lordship over them until the 19th century; Vilves was an independent municipality until the middle of that century, when it was merged into Artesa.
Monument
Termenat castle of the municipality of Artesa de Segre that crowned the hamlet of Tudela de Segre, on the left slope of the river Senill; the current building was raised over the old medieval fortress following a Baroque design, reusing the ashlars from the earlier walls. Tudela has been documented since 1092 and the castle belonged to the viscounts of Áger; throughout the 12th and 13th centuries it passed through the Cervelló family, among them Guerau Alemany de Cervelló, and later through the lords of Olmar and Francesc Gilabert i d'Alentorn, a deputy of the Generalitat of Catalonia. At the beginning of the 19th century it belonged to the marquis of Barberà. During the Civil War it served as a military school and control centre for the Republican forces, from which period drawings survive on its interior walls.
Monument
Castle of the municipality of Artesa de Segre located on the Puig de Grialó, a small hill at the edge of the Força plateau from which the village of Colldelrat and the vall del Segre are overlooked; next to its remains stands the church of Sant Miquel de Grialó. It is documented for the first time in 1039, in the deed of sale of the castle of Artesa, and formed part of the term of the castle of Montmagastre, for which it acted as a secondary stronghold to give warning of troop movements. Remains survive of a square tower about nine metres high, built with large squared ashlars, as well as two cisterns cut into the rock; based on its features the fortification has been dated to the 13th or 14th centuries.
Monument
The castle of Seró, today converted into a manor house (casal), stands in the village of Seró, within the municipality of Artesa de Segre, near the ravine of the river Senill. It has been documented since the 12th century: in 1172 it is mentioned in the will of Ramon Bernat de Seró, who left half of the castle in usufruct to his widow and, upon her death, the whole of it to his son Ponç. The castle gave its name to a lineage, the Seró, present at the conquest of Balaguer in 1091 alongside count Ermengol IV of Urgell.
Monument
Collfred is a population entity of the municipality of Artesa de Segre (Noguera), located at the foot of the puig de Grialó, on the left bank of the river Segre, at the eastern end of the term; it was an independent municipality until the mid-19th century. The castle of Collfred has been documented since the 13th century and belonged to the lordship of the Rubió family; next to it stands the parish church of Sant Martí, in Romanesque style with a single nave.
Monument
The castle of Castelló de Meià, declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), stands in the municipality of Artesa de Segre, atop a crag that separates the valley of Vilanova de Meià from that of the Vall d'Ariet, controlling the passage between the two. It was the patrimony of the Meià family from at least 1080 and passed, through inheritance and exchange, to the Cervera-Meià, to Pere II de Ayerbe and finally to the crown in 1312; in 1426 king Alfonso IV sold it, together with Vilanova de Meià and the castles of Ariet and la Fabregada, to the chapter of la Seu d'Urgell, under whose lordship it remained until the 19th century. Of the fortification, some 30 by 20 metres, remains survive of the wall, especially where the church of Sant Martí stood, and of a circular tower at the centre of the esplanade.
Activity
Centuries-old fair of Sant Bartomeu, also known as the Fira del Meló, held on the second-to-last weekend of August in Artesa de Segre. It took its second name because melons were for a long time its leading product, though this has lost weight as the cultivation of the fruit has declined in the comarca. Today it brings together displays of agricultural and livestock products, a vehicle exhibition and tastings of local produce, along with the sporting, musical and popular-culture activities typical of a patron saint's festival.
Activity
Summer event that brings together in Artesa de Segre melon producers and wineries of the surroundings of the Montsec and the middle Segre. It includes tastings, direct sale and activities around the irrigated crops of the comarca.
