Castle of Vilves Monument · Artesa de Segre, Noguera, Lleida Remains of the castle of Vilves, in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Artesa de Segre, located on the left bank of the river Segre, next to the canal of Urgel. Of the old castle, now within private property, only the tower survives, of an almost square plan and about 10 metres high after being cut down in the early 20th century, visible from the street. It belonged to the viscounty of Áger as a stronghold dependent on the castle of Artesa; in 1131 viscount Guerau II de Cabrera left it as inheritance to his son together with the castles of Comiols, Collfred and Anya. In 1532 the monastery of Montserrat bought Vilves and Collfred, and retained lordship over them until the 19th century; Vilves was an independent municipality until the middle of that century, when it was merged into Artesa.
