What to see and do in Montgai

Montgai
Village
Montgai is a town in the Noguera, on the border with the Urgell, on the banks of the Sió river, formed by the settlements of Montgai and Butsènit d'Urgell, some two kilometres apart, with 640 inhabitants (2025) compared with 106 in the mid-19th century. Count Ramon Berenguer I received the castle of Montgai in 1050; in 1330 it passed to the newly created marquisate of Camarasa, and in 1414 Ferran d'Antequera handed it over, together with Cubells and Camarasa, to Jofre de Becerola, secretary to the queen. Until 1721 it belonged to the corregimiento of Lleida, later passing to the alcaldía mayor of Balaguer. The Romanesque church of Santa María del Castell, with a single nave and semicircular apse, has a 40-metre bell tower, one of the most striking in the comarca. Its economy is agricultural and livestock-based, with irrigation from the Urgell canal.
