Cubells
Village
Cubells is a medieval walled town in the Noguera, with 354 inhabitants (INE 2025), which preserves one of the best-preserved old towns in the comarca. Its castle, now in ruins, had stood since the late 8th or early 9th century on a hill dominating the comarca between the Segre and Sió rivers; it was acquired in 1050, together with that of Camarasa, by Ramon Berenguer I from the emir of Lleida. From Cubells, the Carlist leader Ramon Cabrera wrote in 1848 the document 'Notícies de Cabrera'. Notable are the Romanesque church of Santa María del Castell, with a 13th-century portal with Moorish lacería (strapwork), and that of Sant Pere, Romanesque with Gothic elements, with a stone altarpiece of Santa Úrsula from the Lleida school. The Nit de foc i rock is one of the best-known festivals in the comarca.
