What to see and do in Vilanova de Meià

Vilanova de Meià
Village
Vilanova de Meià is a mountain municipality of the Noguera comarca, in the province of Lleida, with the castles of Vilamajor and Montcortès on the foothills of the Montsec. The prehistoric cave paintings of the Cova del Cogulló, discovered in 1982 and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, show the abstract forms of so-called schematic art, linked to Neolithic groups from between 6,500 and 3,500 years ago. The municipality also preserves the ruins of the old medieval settlement of Meyá, the Romanesque church of San Salvador, which houses a Gothic carving of the Virgen del Puig de Meyá, and the dolmen of the Lloella del Llop, in Santa María de Meyá. It has 479 inhabitants (INE 2025).
