Castle of Castelló de Meià Monument · Artesa de Segre, Noguera, Lleida The castle of Castelló de Meià, declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), stands in the municipality of Artesa de Segre, atop a crag that separates the valley of Vilanova de Meià from that of the Vall d'Ariet, controlling the passage between the two. It was the patrimony of the Meià family from at least 1080 and passed, through inheritance and exchange, to the Cervera-Meià, to Pere II de Ayerbe and finally to the crown in 1312; in 1426 king Alfonso IV sold it, together with Vilanova de Meià and the castles of Ariet and la Fabregada, to the chapter of la Seu d'Urgell, under whose lordship it remained until the 19th century. Of the fortification, some 30 by 20 metres, remains survive of the wall, especially where the church of Sant Martí stood, and of a circular tower at the centre of the esplanade.
