What to see and do in Alòs de Balaguer

Alòs de Balaguer
Village
Alòs de Balaguer is a small municipality in la Noguera, in the province of Lleida, situated in the centre of the comarca beside the river Segre, with 118 inhabitants (INE 2025) who make their living from dry and irrigated farming, livestock and tourism. Its district holds the Cova del Parco, with human occupation since the Palaeolithic, and the prehistoric rock paintings of the Tallat de les Aparets, discovered in 1976 and declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1998 as an example of the schematic art of the earliest Neolithic groups. The village also preserves the Romanesque church of Sant Fèlix, with a Gothic altarpiece, and the ruins of Alós castle.
Castle of Alòs
Monument
Castle that gives its name to the municipality of Alòs de Balaguer, in the Noguera. According to 2019 studies led by the architect Jordi Morros, its construction began around the year 730, which would make it one of the oldest surviving defensive monuments in Catalonia. It was conquered by count Ramon Borrell I in 1015-1016 and definitively by Ramon Berenguer I in 1024, passing to the county of Urgell; in 1058 count Ermengol III enfeoffed it to Arnau Mir de Tost. It combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, and preserves an 18-metre circular tower and a 10-metre wall with a truncated spur. It belonged to the chapter of la Seu d'Urgell until 1831.
Cave of el Parco
Nature
The Cova del Parco is located in the municipality of Alòs de Balaguer, in the spot known as les Roques Prenyades, and is declared a cultural asset of local interest. The surroundings present a landscape of limestone and conglomerate with steep relief carved by the incision of the river Segre; the cave lies above 420 metres above sea level and 120 metres above the riverbed. It is a single-gallery cavity, triangular in plan, 10.5 metres long by a maximum width of 4.5 metres at the entrance, which connects westward with a large rock shelter of 5.5 by 30 metres, closed off by a stone wall that probably served to pen livestock in recent times.
River trout of the Segre
Food and drink
The narrow stretches of the Segre and its reservoirs maintain a river cuisine in which trout is prepared over embers or with belly pork. It is a habitual dish in the restaurants of the riverside villages of the north of the comarca.
