What to see and do in Cervià de Ter

Cervià de Ter
Village
Cervià de Ter is a fortified village in the Gironès, set on flat ground beside the Ter river and dominated by the hill where the scant remains of the castle stand, already mentioned in the 10th century. It preserves its old walled centre, with an entrance gateway, Gothic houses with voussoired doorways and Renaissance windows, and in the square the restored Torre de les Hores, with a clock; the old hospital, on the street of the same name, is today the town hall. The parish church of Sant Genís, already cited in the 11th century, is an 18th-century Baroque building rebuilt after being destroyed in 1936. At one end stands the old Benedictine priory of Santa María, founded in 1053 by Silvi, son of the founder of the Cervià lineage, and declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection category, precursor to the BIC).
Monastery of Santa Maria de Cervià de Ter
Monument
The Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Cervià de Ter, located outside the walls of the old village centre, was founded in 1053 by Silvi Llobet, lord of the castle of Cervià, and his wife Adalets, at a ceremony attended by Count Ramon Berenguer I and Countess Ermessenda de Carcassona. In 1055 it became a priory dependent on the Alpine monastery of San Michele della Chiusa. It had cultural activity and its own school in the 11th century, but went into decline from the 14th century onwards and was disentailed in 1835, ending up converted into a farmhouse. The church, of basilical plan with three naves and three apses opening onto the transept and decorated with Romanesque paintings, is covered with a barrel vault. Acquired by the town council in 1981, its cloister today houses the municipal council chamber.
Tower of les Hores i muralla de Cervià de Ter
Monument
The Torre de les Hores is the most visible remnant of the medieval walled precinct of Cervià de Ter, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It formerly guarded the access gateway to the wall, of which today only a few stretches remain in various streets, along with this circular tower and the western entrance gateway. In the modern era a floor was added to house the bell clock that crowns it, replacing its original defensive function. It is entered through a lintelled door reached by three steps. The adjoining gateway, the only surviving access to the old town, opens with a large voussoired round arch above which two windows open; the small chapel on one of the corners dates from a later period.
Castle of Cervià de Ter
Monument
Old castle in the municipality of Cervià de Ter, from whose surroundings a panoramic view of the Ter valley and les Gavarres is obtained. Its oldest materials date from the 9th-10th centuries, with a major renovation already in the 13th and another transformation at the end of the 14th or beginning of the 15th century. The estate was bought in 989 by Sunyer Llobet and his wife, and later passed through the Cervià, Llers and Xatmar families, until in 1788 the latter married into the Fonsdevielas family, marquises de la Torre, owners until in 2013 the land passed into municipal ownership. Today, partially exposed and quite deteriorated, a circular watchtower 6.5 metres in diameter is preserved, together with wall remains spread over three terraced levels.
The monastery of Santa Maria de Cervià
Historical milestone
Silvi, son of Suñer, and his wife Adalets founded in 1053 the Benedictine Monasterio de Santa Maria de Cervià, next to a castle already documented since the year 922; the monastery became linked to the Italian abbey of San Michele della Chiusa and shaped the life of the Ter valley.
The County of Cervià
Historical milestone
In the middle of the War of the Spanish Succession, Archduke Charles of Austria created the county of Cervià in favor of Ramon de Xammar i Meca as a reward for his Austracist loyalty; the jurisdictional title was extinguished with the Cortes of Cádiz in 1812.
