What to see and do in Viladasens

Viladasens
Village
Viladasens is a rural municipality of the Gironès, on the border with the Alt Empordà, the Baix Empordà and the Pla de l'Estany, scattered across five settlements: Viladasens, Fellines, la Mata, la Mora and Mas Nicolau. Documented since 1058, it was already inhabited in Iberian times and was crossed by the Roman Via Augusta, which gave its name to the Cinyana stream (riera). In the 11th century the parishes of Viladasens and Fellines already existed, with churches of Romanesque origin that are still preserved, along with fortified farmhouses (masies). It was always a farming and livestock area, and its population, which reached 404 inhabitants in 1787, fell by half between 1960 and 1981; it now has 206 inhabitants. Antonio Machado spent his last night in Spain here, that of 26 to 27 January, before crossing the border into France on foot.
Tower of Can Faixat
Monument
A fortified farmhouse documented since 1254 with a battlemented, square-based tower that preserves original 13th-century walls; the poet Antonio Machado spent his last night in Spain here before crossing into France in January 1939. Declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), the defensive tower rises at the north-eastern corner of the farmhouse, of almost rectangular plan and about six by five metres, with access through a small round-arched door reached by a stone staircase. On one of the house's doors the date 1612 is inscribed, from a later restoration. The Faixat family has owned it since its founding, as documents from the 13th century prove, and during the last Carlist war it sheltered numerous followers of that cause.
