What to see and do in Sant Jordi Desvalls

Sant Jordi Desvalls
Village
Sant Jordi Desvalls is a municipality of the Gironès, on the border with the Baix Empordà, whose centre is arranged around the old castle of Sant Jordi and the present-day church of Sant Jordi, within a walled enclosure already documented in 1136. It belonged to the county of Empúries until 1316, when its jurisdiction passed to the bishopric of Girona; in 1424 Alfonso the Magnanimous sold his rights to Baron Andreu de Biure, who had the castle built, and during the civil war of 1462-1472 Queen Joan Enríquez and the future King Ferdinand stayed there during the siege of Girona. Between 1735 and 1737 the church was enlarged, taking on its present-day Baroque appearance over part of the old castle. It also incorporates the former districts of Sobrànigues, Sant Mateu and Diana. It has 880 inhabitants.
