What to see and do in Flaçà

Flaçà
Village
Flaçà, whose historical spelling alternates between Flasa, Flassá and the current Flaçà, is a municipality in the Gironès, beside the Ter river and on the border with the Baix Empordà, with about 1,175 inhabitants. The oldest finds are fragments of Roman pottery from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, although the plain, at the time prone to flooding from the Ter's rises, never had a Roman settlement of its own. It appears documented as Flociano in the year 921, in a donation to the abbey of Lagrasse, and again in a papal bull of 1017. In 1887 it became a communications hub with the construction of the Barcelona-France railway line, with a viaduct over the Ter, and that same year El Carrilet was inaugurated, the small line that linked it to the port of Palamós.
Industrial Colony of Flaçà
Curiosity
A quarter known as la Colònia, built around the former textile factory of Salvador Torres Domènech beside the hermitage of Sant Fermí, an unusual example of industrial architecture in the Gironès.
The arrival of the railway from Palamós to Flaçà
Historical milestone
In 1887 opened the narrow-gauge stretch that linked the port of Palamós with the main line at the station of Flaçà; the small village on the Ter became a transfer hub for the cork and the fish of the Baix Empordà.
