Monastery of Santa Maria de Cervià de Ter Monument · Cervià de Ter, Gironès, Girona The Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Cervià de Ter, located outside the walls of the old village centre, was founded in 1053 by Silvi Llobet, lord of the castle of Cervià, and his wife Adalets, at a ceremony attended by Count Ramon Berenguer I and Countess Ermessenda de Carcassona. In 1055 it became a priory dependent on the Alpine monastery of San Michele della Chiusa. It had cultural activity and its own school in the 11th century, but went into decline from the 14th century onwards and was disentailed in 1835, ending up converted into a farmhouse. The church, of basilical plan with three naves and three apses opening onto the transept and decorated with Romanesque paintings, is covered with a barrel vault. Acquired by the town council in 1981, its cloister today houses the municipal council chamber. Photo: michelglaurent (Public domain) What to see and do in Cervià de Ter
