What to see and do in Sant Martí Vell

Sant Martí Vell
Village
Sant Martí Vell is a small village in the Gavarres, in the Gironès comarca, on the border with the Baix Empordà, already documented in 1035 as 'Sancti Martini qui dicunt vetulo', a reference to the old chapel of the former castle. Between 1879 and 1930 it was joined to the municipality of Madremanya, becoming independent again in 1931. Its parish church of Sant Martí, of Romanesque origin and rebuilt in the 16th century, mixes Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements; at the top of the village stands the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu dels Àngels, with a gathering (aplec) on the first Sunday of May. The main festival is held on the first weekend of July. With barely 271 inhabitants, it lives from dry and irrigated farming, livestock and poultry farming; the designer Elsa Peretti was once a resident of the village.
Shrine of els Àngels
Monument
The Santuari dels Àngels crowns the Puig Alt (490 m), in the Massís de les Gavarres, in the municipality of Sant Martí Vell, and is one of the most visited and venerated sanctuaries in the lands of Girona, dedicated to the Mare de Déu dels Àngels. The building, included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, has a spacious camarín, a small organ and a room with the numerous ex-votos offered by pilgrims, as well as an inn next to the chapel. From there a wide panorama can be seen over the Alt and Baix Empordà, the Gironès and la Selva, with the Pyrenees, the Montseny and the sea in the background. Salvador Dalí and Gala married here in secret on 8 August 1958, before only five witnesses. The sanctuary's feast day is 2 August.
