What to see and do in Juià

Juià
Village
Juià is a small municipality in the Gironès comarca, situated in the northern sector of the Gavarres massif, in the zone of contact between mountain and plain. It has 319 inhabitants. The centre, of stone houses, developed around the medieval castle known as Castrum Iulianum, documented since the 11th century, from whose ruins the Ter valley is overlooked. The parish church, dedicated to Sant Pere, is Gothic in style, with a likewise Gothic bell tower, and the festa major is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. In the municipal term is also preserved the old sanctuary of Sant Joan de l'Erm, seat in the Middle Ages of a small Benedictine women's priory that declined around 1348.
Castle of Juià
Monument
Remains of the medieval castle of Juià, located on top of a hill overlooking the Ter valley, on the northern buttresses of the Gavarres massif; today only some vertical walls and the defensive moat survive. The site, probably of late-antique origin, is documented for the first time in the early 11th century, when the will of Gilabert de Cruïlles, from the year 1035, cites a place called Iuliano. From an early period the castle was linked to the episcopal see of Girona, although the lords of Cervià exercised rights over it by concession of the bishopric; in 1354 the bishop went so far as to demand that Francesc de Cervià return control of the fortress to him. It was part of a set of strongholds of the bishopric of Girona, together with the castles of Palagret, Celrà and Barbavella.
