What to see and do in Celrà

Celrà
Village
Celrà is a town in the Gironès comarca, between the Ter river and the Gavarres massif, with 5,621 inhabitants (INE 2025). Documented since the year 922 as Celerano, it preserves a fortified medieval centre, the Sagrera, and a highly valuable riverside natural environment at the Illa dels Salzes. During feudalisation three lordly domains were distinguished -the castle of Celrà, that of Barbavella and that of Palagret-, and in its municipal term the waters of the Ter and its tributaries were harnessed by several hydraulic flour mills. Celrà was the setting for the first meeting of the remença peasants, in October 1448, and during the Catalan Civil War it was taken by storm in 1462. In the early 19th century it suffered two occupations by Napoleonic troops.
Desvern Tower
Monument
A slender Romanesque tower with a triple window, attributed to stonemasons of the Girona school, which formed part of a fortified complex in the district of Celrà. Also called Torre Desbach, it today forms part of a fortified farmhouse of medieval origin remodelled in the 18th century, located near the castle of the Escala family, with which it had no historical connection despite the proximity. The oldest section, from the 12th-13th centuries, is the corner tower, rectangular in plan with well-cut ashlar and loopholes; the triple window, with small round arches and capitals carved with lions and palmettes, is attributed to Arnau Gatell. It belonged to the Desvern and Desbac families, whose coat of arms -an alder tree with its roots, crossed by a river- appears at various points on the building.
Island of the Willows
Nature
An area of riverside woodland on the banks of the Ter, with willows and alders, walkable on a circular route of about 6 km with panels adapted for visually impaired people.
Sant Feliu de Celrà
Monument
Sant Feliu de Celrà, the large church at the centre of the town, is already documented in 1061, in an agreement between the counts Ramon Berenguer I and Almodis de la Marca and the viscount Ponç I de Cabrera; in 1088 Bishop Berenguer Guifré ceded it to the chapter of Girona. With a Latin-cross plan with side chapels, a vault with lunettes and a dome on squinches over the crossing, it preserves the Romanesque base of the bell tower, with a double-splayed window, while the façade and the rest of the bell tower are baroque, with Corinthian capitals similar to those of Girona; the façade, closed in 1803, displays a neoclassical door. Inside are kept statues from an old altarpiece. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Local (IPAC 20937).
Weekly market of Celrà
Activity
Every Friday a food market is set up in the village with local produce from the Ter lowlands, where farmers and stockbreeders of the area sell fruit, vegetables, eggs and cured meats directly.
