What to see and do in Bordils

Bordils
Village
Bordils is a municipality in the Gironès comarca, in the province of Girona, situated on the plain of the Ter river and crossed by the Barcelona-Portbou railway line. Its municipal term, 7.2 square kilometres and completely flat, has a third of its area covered by poplars and riverside trees. The village has been documented since the year 990 under the spelling Burdilis, and in 1220 it was a walled fortress with four gateways or portalets; in 1462 its plain was the setting for a battle of the Catalan Civil War. It lives from irrigated farming and livestock raising. In the old centre stands out the church of Sant Esteve, in late Gothic style from the 16th century, with a Renaissance main altarpiece, and declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It has 1,841 inhabitants.
Church of Sant Esteve de Bordils
Monument
The church of Sant Esteve de Bordils, in Gothic style with Renaissance details, began to be built in 1561, as the inscription on the main door states. It has a single nave covered with ribbed vaults, whose central keystones show the coats of arms of Bordils, the pope and Catalonia; the springings of the arches are carved with figures of animals. It has three chapels on each side, added in the 18th century, and a square-based bell tower topped by an octagonal body with pointed arcades, gargoyles and pierced balustrade. Two 16th-century defensive turrets flank the main façade. It is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection).
Girona Apple PGI
Food and drink
Apple of the Golden, Red Delicious, Gala and Granny Smith varieties grown in the plain of the Ter, protected by a European geographical indication since 2003; the alluvial soils and the tramontana give it acidity and firmness.
