What to see and do in Argençola

Argençola
Village
Argençola is a municipality in the north of the comarca of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, with mountainous relief, with altitudes ranging from 420 metres on the banks of the Clariana stream to 793 metres on the sierra de la Portella. Made up of eight population centres, including Argençola and Contrast, and the old depopulated terms of Albarells and la Goda, it preserves the castle of Argençola, from the 11th century, and in Contrast a medieval tower from the 12th and 13th centuries next to the Romanesque church of San Mauro. Its coat of arms, with three golden pine cones, gathers the traditional arms of the Argençola family, lords of the village, and the crown refers to the marquisate of Argençola, obtained in 1702 by Jeroni de Rocabertí Argençola. It has 245 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Argençola
Monument
Remains of the termenat castle of Argençola, documented since the 10th century, above the old village.
Castle of Clariana
Monument
The castle of Clariana, in the municipal area of Argençola (Anoia), is documented for the first time in 989, when Eldemar bequeathed it in his will to his brother Sesmon de Oló, a levite linked to the church of Vic; the monastery of Sant Cugat also held rights over the place. In 1114 the abbot of Sant Cugat and Guillem Pere agreed to rebuild it, probably after its destruction by the Almoravids, and it was then that the Clariana lineage was formed, castellans of the place under the lordship of the abbot, confirmed by James I in 1234. Now in ruins, it preserves part of the walls and a badly damaged circular tower, 5.16 metres in external diameter, with three floors separated by vaults, as well as a rock-cut tomb that has already been plundered. It has been a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 1988.
Round Tower of Contrast
Monument
Circular Romanesque watchtower in the former municipal area of Contrast, now part of Argençola (Anoia, Barcelona), probably built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It presided over a farmstead documented since 1241, under the abbatial lordship of Sant Pere dels Arquells and Montserrat, and belonged civilly to the Jorba family and later the Rocabertí family. Cylindrical in plan, it is about 20 metres high and 6.40 metres in external diameter, and is divided into three sections separated by stone vaults; it was originally a defensive fortification and was later used as a water tank. Restored in 1983 by its owner Josep Cortès, it is in excellent condition and was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) that same year.
Megalithic Tomb of els Plans de Ferran
Curiosity
The megalithic tomb of the Plans de Ferran is a quadrangular cist located on the boundaries of the municipality of Argençola (Anoia), although a 2007 Generalitat boundary revision assigned it administratively to Santa Coloma de Queralt. It dates from the early-to-middle Bronze Age, between 2000 and 1200 BC. Excavations in 1973 uncovered the remains of at least ten adults and four children from a homogeneous group, with an average height of between 161 and 164 centimetres, together with fragments of hand-made pottery and two bronze rings. The triangular cover slab preserves engravings of Latin crosses of unknown date and two cup marks. The monument is included in the Inventory of the Archaeological and Palaeontological Heritage of Catalonia.
Albarells
Curiosity
Albarells is a former settlement, now abandoned, situated atop a hill at about 600 metres above sea level, in the north-east of the municipality of Argençola, in the Anoia comarca, west of the Serra d'Albarells and south of Santa Maria del Camí. Although depopulated and with most of its buildings in ruins, the church of Sant Martí d'Albarells and the Cal Morera farmhouse still stand out. It was home to the oldest documented paper mill in Catalonia, dated to 1113.
