What to see and do in Montmaneu

Montmaneu
Village
Montmaneu is a municipality in the north of l'Anoia, in Barcelona, with 181 inhabitants, in the transition between the high plateau of la Segarra and the first rises of the comarca, at the Coll de la Panadella, which rises above 700 metres. The village appears mentioned in 11th-century documents as Monte Maneui and in 1242 was ceded to the monastery of Santes Creus. During the Carlist Wars, in 1837, 276 soldiers were shot at la Panadella by order of General Benet Tristany. It preserves the Gothic church of Santa María, from the 14th century, and a cylindrical tower of the old castle, documented since 1176 and listed as a bien de interés nacional (a heritage site of national interest); in the hamlet of la Panadella stands the Torre de la Panadella, a watchpoint over the road to Lleida.
Tower of la Panadella
Monument
A defence and watchtower located at the Coll de la Panadella pass, in Montmaneu, comarca of Anoia, at a strategic crossing point towards the Segarra that controlled the old royal road to Lleida. Despite its appearance of an old fortification, popularly known as el Castellot, studies place it in the 19th century, built to watch over the road during the Peninsular War and the Carlist Wars, and it came to be used as an optical telegraph tower between Barcelona and Lleida. Circular in plan, today it retains barely four or five metres in height, built of local stone. In the same area, the village of la Panadella, at about 710 metres above sea level, marks the watershed between the Segre and the Llobregat and the boundary between the eastern and western Catalan dialects.
Castle of Riquer
Monument
Remains of the castle of Riquer, in the municipality of Montmaneu.
