What to see and do in Sant Guim de Freixenet

Sant Guim de Freixenet
Village
Sant Guim de Freixenet is a municipality in the comarca of la Segarra, in the province of Lleida, formerly called Pineda de Segarra, which grew up around the railway station on the Barcelona-Lérida line in the late 19th century; on 5 April 1938 it suffered the bombing of the station during the Civil War. The municipality also groups together the historic hamlets of Altadill, Amorós, El Castell de Santa Maria, Freixenet de Segarra — the former head town —, La Rabassa, Palamós, Sant Domí, Sant Guim Vell and La Tallada. It preserves the castle of la Tallada, the church of Santa María de Freixenet, in part in the 11th-century Lombard Romanesque style, a former Jesuit convent and the Celler Cooperatiu, a modernist building by Cèsar Martinell. It has 1,235 inhabitants.
Castle of Freixenet
Monument
Castle documented since 1064 that gives its name to Freixenet de Segarra, probably built in the mid-11th century at the time of the conquest of the area; it has left no visible remains, since its stones were reused for the village houses and probably for the church. In the late 14th century it was the lordship of Pere de Niubò, in 1408 of Ramon de Pinós, and in 1426 it passed to the abbot of Sant Vicenç de Cardona.

Historical milestone
The present settlement of Sant Guim de Freixenet was formed in the nineteenth century around the station of the railway line that links Barcelona with Zaragoza and Madrid. The stop turned a scattered hamlet into the loading point for the grain of the Segarra.
