What to see and do in Veciana

Veciana
Village
Veciana is a small municipality in the north of the comarca of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, with 168 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread across six settlements and numerous farmhouses. The terrain, uneven, is crossed by streams and torrents that give rise to the Anoia river, and the altitude ranges between 766 and 470 metres; the settlement of Segur, at 760 metres, offers panoramic views over the Calaf plateau. It lives off agriculture, livestock farming and mining. It preserves the castle of Veciana, now in ruins, and the Romanesque-style church of Santa Maria de Veciana, alongside the also Romanesque 11th-century church of Sant Pere del Vim, and the chapel of Santa Maria del Camí, in the separate settlement of the same name.
Castle of Veciana
Monument
Of the castle of Veciana, declared a cultural asset of national interest, hardly any visible remains survive beside the ruined chapel of Sant Miquel: one can make out on the ground a square construction eight metres on each side, with an attached circular-plan outbuilding on its south side. At the start of the 11th century the castle was in the hands of the Balsareny family, who in 1045 stipulated in a will that it should pass to the episcopal see of Vic; the bishop enfeoffed it in 1089 to Guillem Ramon de Cervera, whose successors swore fealty to the counts of Barcelona in 1096 and 1131. In the 14th century King Peter III sold Veciana to Joan de Montbui, and in 1392 it passed to Mateu de Calders, who incorporated it into the barony of Segur; around 1707 it came to the Copons family and, at the end of the century, to the Grimau and Vilallonga families.
Sant Miquel del castell de Veciana
Monument
Chapel included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, located in the hamlet of Veciana, in the comarca of Anoia, attached to the town hall, on the site that had been occupied by the castle of Veciana, known since the 11th century. Single-naved with a semicircular apse, it preserves remains of three walls and half of the 13th-century apse, with a window with double splay, along with part of the triumphal arch and vestiges of a brick vault that replaced the original stone one after a collapse in the 17th century. The door opened in the south wall, of which the lower part of the jambs and two stepped stone thresholds survive. Worship was maintained until the 1910s; in 1939 a road cut through the slope beside the apse, causing the loss of its northern half.
Santa Maria de Veciana
Monument
Single-nave church with a semicircular apse decorated with an archivolt window, in the municipality of Veciana (Anoia). The parish of Santa Maria held the seigneurial jurisdiction of almost half the lands of the municipality until the 19th century, and was a suffragan of Sant Pere de Montfalcó. In the last third of the 12th century a reconstruction was carried out, and in the mid-17th century the vault and roof collapsed; a shallow Gothic vault was then raised over the original semicircular arch, which is preserved. The doorway, on the south façade, has a triple archivolt with interlace patterns on the central one, and the bell tower is a bell-gable. The church is undergoing restoration, focused on highlighting its Romanesque elements.
