What to see and do in Santa Coloma de Queralt

Santa Coloma de Queralt
Village
Santa Coloma de Queralt is a town with a notable medieval old quarter in the Baixa Segarra, in the Conca de Barberà comarca, in Tarragona. It stands on the right bank of the Gaià river, protected by the Aguiló and Codony mountain ranges. Its origin lies in the primitive church of Santa Coloma, documented in 976, linked to the castle of Queralt, the first centre of the barony that gave its name to the Queralt lineage, lords of the place since 1213. In 1222 James I granted it a weekly market, whereby it gained town status, and between the 13th century and 1492 it had an important Jewish community. In the first half of the 14th century the hospital of Santa Magdalena was founded and the first municipal school was created. It lived off cereal farming and the textile industry. It has 2,795 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Santa Coloma de Queralt Main Festival
Activity
The fiesta mayor of Santa Coloma de Queralt is celebrated in a town that was home to one of the most active Jewish communities of inland Catalonia, with its own synagogue, butcher shop and documented moneylenders; it suffered an assault during the plague of 1348 and disappeared with the expulsion of 1492.

Historical milestone
Santa Coloma de Queralt was home to one of the most active Jewish communities in inland Catalonia, documented since 1272 and clearly growing during the first half of the 14th century: in the period 1347-50 there were 81 Jewish heads of family, and a 1347 letter speaks of fifty Jewish houses in the town. Its merchants were mainly engaged in importing French cloth, trading in wheat and livestock, and lending at interest, and from the late 14th century they played a leading role in exporting Coloma saffron across Europe. The community, with a synagogue, its own butcher's shop and documented moneylenders, suffered an assault during the 1348 plague and disappeared when the Catholic Monarchs ordered the expulsion of Jews who had not converted, on 30 March 1492.
Almonds and dried fruit of the Baixa Segarra
Food and drink
The dry lands of the Segarra sector of the comarca combine cereal, vine and almond. The almond is gathered at the end of summer and is the basis of turróns, panellets and of the picadas that thicken the traditional stews of the area.
