What to see and do in Jorba

Jorba
Village
Jorba is a municipality of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, in the valley of the river of the same name before it reaches Igualada, with the Sant Salvador viewpoint looking out over a plateau to the north of the term. It has 850 inhabitants. Mentioned in a bull of 978, in the 12th century it was the seat of the barony of Jorba, whose first lord, Guerau de Jorba, was an adviser to Ramón Berenguer IV and to Alfonso II of Aragon. Of the 11th-century castle, partly destroyed during the First Carlist War, fragments of wall and defensive towers remain. The parish church of San Pedro was built between 1551 and 1558, and in Sant Genís the Romanesque sanctuary of Santa María de la Sala, from the 12th century, is preserved. It lives off dry-farming and pig farming.
Castle of Jorba
Monument
Remains of the castle that crowns the hill of la Guàrdia (549 m), above the village of Jorba, comarca of Anoia. Romanesque in style, it is documented for the first time in 978 and was the centre of the barony of Jorba, whose first lord, Guerau de Jorba, was a councillor to Ramon Berenguer IV. At the end of the 12th century the barony passed, through marriage, to the viscounty of Cardona, and changed hands several times until reaching the counts of Aranda and the dukes of Híjar. It served as a barracks for the liberal forces during the first Carlist War, which led to its destruction, along with the chapel, between 1833 and 1840; in 1890 its ruins were acquired by the Muntadas family. Today it is preserved in poor condition: only a circular tower remains, from the 12th or 13th century, along with fragments of the perimeter walls.
Viewpoint of Sant Salvador
Nature
The Sant Salvador viewpoint corresponds to the Capella de Sant Salvador, in the locality of Mas de Bover, within the municipality of Jorba (Anoia). It is a ruined temple in late Romanesque style from the 12th-13th centuries, of rectangular plan, of which only the north wall and part of the east wall survive, built in ashlar with mortar and with six courses of visible plinth; it also preserves remains of a barrel vault in the north sector and the access door facing east. The west side was lost when the Can Bover farmhouse was built against it. Nearby there is a spring covered using the technique of a false dome by corbelled courses. It is catalogued in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia under number 5831.
