What to see and do in Bellprat

Bellprat
Village
Bellprat is a small municipality of l'Anoia, in Barcelona, on the foothills of the sierra de Queralt, surrounded by forests and fields, with human presence since the Bronze Age. It has 69 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared to 300 in the mid-19th century; today barely twenty people live there year-round. The village grew at the foot of the castle of Queralt, documented since the year 960, around the church of Sant Salvador, which took on parish functions in 1425. It has lived off cereal, legume and grape farming, and lignite and bauxite operations. Since 2008 it has celebrated Bellprat, Vila del Llibre, a book fair that multiplies its population twenty-five-fold over a weekend. It was the birthplace of Natividad Yarza, the first democratically elected Spanish woman mayor.
Castle of Queralt
Monument
Medieval termenat castle situated atop the hill that overlooks Bellprat, with the church of Sant Jaume de Queralt at its foot. It stands at the western end of the Queralt mountain range, near the boundary with La Conca de Barberà, l'Alt Camp and l'Alt Penedès, and in the 10th century it marked the westernmost limit of the March of the county of Osona. Sold in the year 976 by Counts Borrell II and Ledgarda to the viscount of Barcelona, it later passed to the Gurb-Queralt family, one of whose members, Guillem Bernat, who died in 1084, was the first to adopt Queralt as a surname. Notable figures emerged from this lineage, such as Pedro VI de Queralt, a soldier and diplomat in the service of the kings of Aragon, and Pedro VIII, who in 1599 received from Philip III the title of Count of Santa Coloma.
Church of Sant Jaume de Queralt
Monument
Single-nave Romanesque church, situated at the foot of the castle of Queralt, in the municipal area of Bellprat (Anoia). It was built around the 11th century and preserves, on its side walls, blind arcading grouped in threes between pilaster strips and Lombard bands, as well as a rebuilt bell-gable; the original apse was later replaced by a rectangular structure. Already documented in the 11th century as the earliest parish of the place, it belonged to a noble family of Queralt, mentioned in a will of 1166. It is no longer used for worship and is undergoing consolidation work; the 2021 fire reached it, although the damage to its remains was superficial.
