What to see and do in Almonacid de la Sierra

Almonacid de la Sierra
Village
Almonacid de la Sierra is a municipality in Valdejalón, in the province of Zaragoza, about 50 km from the capital, on the slopes of the Sierra de Algairén, with 756 inhabitants (INE 2025). The castle and the town were founded by the Muslim al-Munascid, and for centuries Muslim rule shaped its pottery-making tradition; after the Reconquest it passed through various lords until, from 1414, it remained in the hands of the Urrea family, Counts of Aranda, until the abolition of the seigneuries in 1812. It lost more than 1,200 residents with the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1610-1611, who made up the majority of its population according to the 1495 fogaje (household census). In 1884, while repairing an old house, Arabic and Aljamiado manuscripts were found, among the most important discovered in the peninsula, now held at the CSIC. Its church of the Annunciation was inaugurated in 1703.
