La Almunia de Doña Godina
Village
La Almunia de Doña Godina is the capital of the comarca of Valdejalón, in the province of Zaragoza, in the transition zone between the Sierra de Algairén and the Jalón valley, which forms the boundary with Ricla. Its name combines the Hispano-Arabic word almunya (orchard) with that of its former owner, doña Godina. With 8,080 inhabitants, it stands at 366 metres above sea level and holds the titles of Very Noble and Most Faithful Town, granted by Philip V for its loyalty during the War of Succession. Its history goes back to the Celtiberian city of Nertobriga, of the Belli tribe, which minted coins in the 3rd century BC and whose remains lie next to the hermitage of Cabañas. Here, the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem maintained a complex with a church, hospital and palace built in the early 18th century.
