What to see and do in Cosuenda

Cosuenda
Village
Cosuenda is a wine-growing municipality of the Campo de Cariñena, at the foot of the Sierra de Algairén, with 344 inhabitants. At the top of the village it preserves a group of wine cellars cut into the rock, a defensive tower and the remains of an old castle; its cooperative produces pajarilla, a white wine made from Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, fermented with the skins and aged oxidatively in barrel. The village is presided over by the baroque church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, begun in 1681 and consecrated in 1686, with a Latin-cross plan, three naves, a central dome and a bell tower with five bells. Beside the road towards Almonacid de la Sierra stands the peirón (wayside pillar) of San Bernabé, where until 2001 the Bendición de los Términos (Blessing of the Boundaries) was held every 3 May to protect the harvests.

Defence Tower of Cosuenda
Monument
The defensive tower of Cosuenda (Campo de Cariñena, Zaragoza), known as la Lisalta, is all that remains of the castle of Cosuenda, whose construction was ordered in the 14th century in the face of the threat of Castilian invasion. The castle was destroyed in the battle with the Castilians and was rebuilt in the late 14th century by order of the archbishop of Zaragoza García Fernández de Heredia; the tower, in Gothic-Toledan style due to its twin windows, was modified in the 16th century. Square in plan with five-metre sides, it stands at the most strategic corner and came to house two bells and two small cymbala, as well as a third, smaller cymbalum. It was restored in 2019 and today once again dominates the village.
Festivities of invierno de Cosuenda
Activity
Cosuenda's winter festival is held at the top of a village with wine cellars carved into the rock beside the remains of an old castle, where the San Bernabé cooperative still makes pajarilla, an oxidatively aged white wine widely consumed between the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Food and drink
White wine of garnacha blanca and macabeo harvested late, fermented with the skins and aged oxidatively in barrel for years. Much drunk between the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, today it is made by the San Bernabé cooperative within the DO Cariñena.
