What to see and do in Alfamén

Alfamén
Village
Alfamén is a wine-growing municipality of the Campo de Cariñena, in the province of Zaragoza, at 373 metres of altitude. Its name, of Arabic origin, has been interpreted as AL-HAMMAM, 'bath' or 'hot spring', although some authors such as Juan A. Souto prefer to identify it with Fahs al-Hamam, 'the plain of the doves', cited by al-'Udri in the itinerary from Córdoba to Zaragoza. In the mid-19th century it had 245 inhabitants and a glass factory with eight to twelve workers, according to Pascual Madoz's dictionary; today it has 1,470 (INE 2025). Its parish church is under the patronage of the Purísima (Immaculate Conception). San Roque is the patron saint of the village and is celebrated on 16 August, together with a tribute to the Virgin of the Assumption from the 14th to the 18th of that month; Isidro Labrador is also celebrated on 15 May.
