Tobed
Village
Tobed is a municipality in the province of Zaragoza, in the region of the Community of Calatayud, with 196 inhabitants, situated in the valley of the Grío river, at the foot of the Sierra del Vicor. It belonged from the 12th century to the lordship of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Its church of Santa María, in Gothic-Mudéjar style, stands at the top of the village and was built by that order; in 2001 it was included, as one of the representative buildings of Aragonese Mudéjar architecture, in the Unesco World Heritage declaration. It is used on special occasions, while daily parish life is centred on the church of San Pedro Apóstol, in the lower part of the village. The municipality also preserves a castle declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Church of Santa María de Tobed
Monument
This fortified church, built by the Order of the Holy Sepulchre under the patronage of Henry of Trastámara and a reference point of Aragonese Mudéjar for its exposed brickwork and glazed ceramics, was constructed between 1356 and 1400. Its typology, defined by professor Gonzalo M. Borrás Gualis as a Mudéjar fortress-church, responds to the war between Peter IV of Aragon and Peter I of Castile: it served both as a temple and as a defensive structure near the border, conceived on the outside for combat, with a perimeter gallery and a defensive parapet walk. For its high altar, the painter Jaume Serra made a retable now kept at the Museo del Prado. Unesco added it in 2001 to the extension of the World Heritage listing of Mudéjar architecture of Aragon.
