What to see and do in Segorbe

Segorbe
Village
Segorbe is the capital of the comarca of Alto Palancia, in the south of the province of Castellón (Valencian Community), with 9,805 inhabitants (INE 2025). It was the seat of the diocese of Segorbe until 1960, and today shares with Castellón de la Plana the see of the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón. Its old town, declared as a whole a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), concentrates an important cathedral heritage, walls and a medieval aqueduct. Human presence is attested from the Middle Palaeolithic, although the population did not settle permanently until the Bronze Age; the earliest finds, from the Iberian period, come from the hill of Sopeña, the original nucleus of present-day Segorbe, situated on the natural route between the Mediterranean coast and Aragón.
Cathedral-Basilica of Santa María de Segorbe
Monument
The cathedral of Segorbe, built between the 12th and 17th centuries, seat of the Diocese of Segorbe-Castellón, with a notable cathedral museum.
Aqueduct of Segorbe
Monument
The 14th-century medieval aqueduct of Segorbe forms, together with the castle of la Estrella or de Sopeña and the walls, an ensemble declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 8 May 2003. The castle crowns one of the hills on which the city sits, and the walls run from its surroundings to the old town, where remains still survive along much of their course. Of the aqueduct, however, only a few arches remain today, located within the town centre itself, among them the section that runs through the interior of the Torre del Verdugo.
Walls of Segorbe
Monument
The medieval walled enclosure of Segorbe, of which stretches, gateways and towers survive, such as the Verónica arch, the Torre del Verdugo and the Torre de la Cárcel.
Entrada de Toros y Caballos de Segorbe
Activity
La Entrada de toros y caballos is a popular festival of Segorbe that arose from the traditional driving of cattle to the square where they were to be run, declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional (Spain's highest category of tourist festival) and Bien de Interés Cultural Inmaterial (the highest level of protection for intangible heritage). It is held on the second Saturday of September at 2 p.m., with a bull run of about 40-45 seconds to the plaza de la Cueva Santa, in which six fighting bulls take part, driven by riders on horseback, with no barrier other than the human walls formed by the residents themselves. Its exact origin is unknown, although there is record of bull festivities in Segorbe as early as 1386, linked to the dedications of San Juan and San Pedro; the custom stemmed from driving the bulls from the pens located next to the river, more than a kilometre from the village.
The union of the dioceses of Segorbe and Albarracín
Historical milestone
A papal decision that in 1259 united the episcopal sees of Segorbe and Albarracín: after Segorbe was conquered by the Aragonese Christians, Pope Innocent IV entrusted the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the area to the bishop of Albarracín in 1247, and on 18 March 1259 Alexander IV formally decreed the union of the two churches. The resulting bishopric straddled the crowns of Aragon and Castile, with Segorbe in the Kingdom of Valencia and Albarracín in Aragon, a singular situation that was maintained until Gregory XIII separated the two dioceses again in 1577, precisely because of that difference in kingdom. This union explains the ecclesiastical weight that Segorbe kept for centuries, today the seat, together with Castellón, of the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón.
The creation of the duchy of Segorbe
Historical milestone
John II of Aragon raised the city to the head of a duchy in 1469 and named as first duke his nephew Henry of Aragon and Pimentel, then only fourteen years old, known as the Infante Fortuna and son of the turbulent Infante Henry of Aragon, who died in 1445 of wounds from the Battle of Olmedo. The title later passed to the Cardona family and turned Segorbe into a seigneurial court of the Valencian interior; in 1520 Emperor Charles V granted it grandeeship of the first class, one of the most important noble distinctions in Spain. Today it belongs to a minor branch of the House of Medinaceli, whose current holder, resident in Seville, is the nineteenth Duke of Segorbe.
The Segorbe stew
Food and drink
A stew of chickpeas, vegetables and pig-slaughter meats characteristic of the city, in a cooking that lies on the border between the Valencian and the Aragonese; beside it are oven-baked rice, empedrao and tortas Cristina.
