What to see and do in Castellnovo

Castellnovo
Village
Castellnovo is a municipality of 912 inhabitants in the Alto Palancia, province of Castellón, close to Segorbe, on the southern slope of the hill of San Cristóbal, between the sierras of Calderona and Espadán. The castle that gives the town its name, Castell Novo, dates from Roman times and was rebuilt by the Moriscos; the present-day settlement, of Muslim origin, was conquered together with Segorbe by the troops of James I in 1228. It later passed through several lineages, among them the Borjas, until the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, when the town, almost depopulated, was resettled with Aragonese, Navarrese and Catalan colonists. In the 17th century it passed to the Folch de Cardona family. It preserves a cistern of Arab origin and a castle, and in 1836 was the scene of a bloody clash between liberals and Carlists.
Arab cistern and Castle of Castellnovo
Monument
Arab cistern and castle of Castellnovo, next to the hermitages of Saint Christopher and Saint Anthony of Padua. The cistern, from the Muslim period, has an underground chamber reached by a large stairway and a circular tank with a capacity of 200,000 litres, and is preserved in very good condition. The castle, of Roman origin and rebuilt by the Muslims as part of Segorbe's defensive network, was conquered by James I in 1233 and later belonged to Berenguer d'Entença and, from the 14th century, to Guillem d'Esplugues. In the mid-15th century it was refurbished with a Renaissance stamp, with arched rooms and ribbed vaults; today it survives in ruins, with notable remains still standing.
The battle of Castellnovo between liberals and Carlists
Historical milestone
The village was the scene in 1836 of a bloody clash during the First Carlist War, in a valley that the bands crossed again and again as it was a natural passage between Valencia and the Maestrazgo.
Cabbage stew
Food and drink
A stew of cabbage, potato and beans with cured sausages from the pig slaughter, among them onion black pudding; the artisan cheeses and the oil from the Espadán side complete the village's larder.
