What to see and do in Navajas

Navajas
Village
Navajas is a municipality in Alto Palancia, in Castellón, known for its springs and gardens, situated in the middle valley of the Palancia river, less than a kilometre from its course. It has 906 inhabitants. Of Muslim origin, it was reconquered by James I in 1238 and received its settlement charter in 1610, after the expulsion of the Moriscos; in 1636 the magistrate Roque Pastor planted the elm tree that today presides over the square bearing his name. From the 18th century onward, drawn by the climate, wealthy families from Valencia built summer residences here. It preserves the Altomira tower, a cylindrical 11th-century Arab tower, and the parish church of the Virgen de la Luz, from the 18th century. Its cuisine is notable for ajoaceite de palo and buñuelos de hoja.
Festivities of Navajas
Activity
Navajas's patronal festival is in honour of the Virgen de la Luz, at the end of September, with a fireball-horned bull; in January Sant Antoni is also celebrated, with a bonfire and the handing out of wine and meat.
Tower of Altomira
Monument
The Altomira tower, in Navajas (Alto Palancia, Castellón), is a watchtower and communications tower listed as bien de interés cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It stands on a hill overlooking the town, one kilometre from the urban centre, in the Altomira site that gives it its name. Its dating is uncertain: some authors consider its foundations Roman, while others, such as Vicente Forcada Martí, place it around the 11th century, as a border tower linked to Segorbe Castle. It has a truncated-conical plan topped with battlements, standing 15.5 metres tall with an outer perimeter of 21 metres; its masonry combines river pebbles and lime mortar at the base with rough stone on the upper floors, arranged over five storeys connected by a staircase, with defensive arrow slits particularly numerous on the third and fourth.

Monument

Bride's Leap Waterfall
Nature
A 30-metre waterfall formed by the Palancia river almost one kilometre southeast of Navajas, in the comarca of El Alto Palancia. It is formed by the Brazal waterfall, a cascade that falls suspended from the rock in a single drop, the result of the erosion of the terrain and its limestone walls over millions of years; in the surrounding area, this same erosion has left numerous caves. It is one of the most visited natural sites in the comarca, especially in summer, when the town council organises events by the waterfall.
