What to see and do in Soneja

Soneja
Village
Soneja is a municipality in the comarca of El Alto Palancia (Castellón), with 1521 inhabitants (INE 2025) and 29.10 km², crossed by the Palancia river on the route to Aragón from Valencia. The area around La Dehesa shows human settlements from the Epipalaeolithic, and the present urban centre did not become established as a settlement until the 10th or 11th century. José Folch de Cardona granted, in 1609, the first settlement charter signed on Castellón territory after the Morisco expulsion decree; it preserves an aqueduct of Islamic origin that still carries water from the Palancia to the market gardens, the walls raised between 1839 and 1840 after the assault and fire of 1836, a church from 1751-1768 with a bell dating from around 1250, and the La Dehesa municipal nature site, declared in 2002.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de Soneja
Monument
Church in Soneja built between 1751 and 1768 in Corinthian style with rococo decoration, housing a bell from around 1250, one of the three oldest in the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón.
Aqueduct of El Arco de Soneja
Monument
Aqueduct of Islamic origin in Soneja that still carries water from the Palancia river to the municipality's market gardens, specifically channelling the waters of the main irrigation ditch. It is listed within the town's civil heritage as an outstanding example of hydraulic architecture from the Muslim period in the comarca of Alto Palancia.
Carlist walls of Soneja
Monument
The walls of Soneja are the remains of the defensive fortification the town built between 1839 and 1840, after the assault it suffered on 17 July 1836, when José Miralles, el Serrador, entered the town, taking advantage of the fact that a good part of the able-bodied men had fled, and the population was looted and set on fire, with victims among the residents. Following the intervention of General Narváez, Soneja decided to wall itself in, combining the walls of the houses themselves, with loopholes cut into them, trenches and walls closing off the streets, built of rammed earth. Today barely any remains survive, with a few loopholes still visible; the ensemble has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since January 2012.
La Dehesa of Soneja
Nature
A municipal natural area of Soneja declared in 2002, with an interpretation centre and the botanical micro-reserve of the Balsa de la Dehesa. It occupies a plateau at about 440 metres above sea level in the comarca of Alto Palancia, where two lagoons are located - one now dried up - formed on Triassic sandstones that retain water thanks to the underlying clays. Within the protected area there are six archaeological sites from the Bronze Age and the Iberian period. It stands out for its siliceous vegetation, with cork-oak woods and an endorheic lagoon unique in the Comunitat Valenciana, alongside traditional crops of almond, carob and olive trees. It is home to vulnerable species such as the western spadefoot toad and the sharp-ribbed newt, and is included in the Comunitat Valenciana's Catalogue of Wetlands.
Bells of los Cuartos of Soneja
Curiosity
The church of Soneja preserves the Campana de los Cuartos, dated to around 1250, which makes it the oldest in the Diocese of Segorbe-Castellón, one of the three oldest in the Comunitat Valenciana and one of the five oldest in Spain. It shares its bell tower with other historic pieces, among them a Gothic bell from around 1550 called María, and others from the late 18th century and the 19th century.
Patron Saint Festivities of Soneja
Activity
Festivities of Soneja with a century-old parade, a shawl dance and a 15 km popular race. They are held on the last weekend of September in honour of the Christ of the Blood and Saint Michael the Archangel. The cavalcade is more than a century old, and the shawl dance is performed with Manila shawls. The festive programme also includes the proclamation of the fiestas queen, tributes to the town's elders and religious events, as well as the Gran Fondo, a 15-kilometre semi-urban footrace.
The first resettlement charter after the expulsion of the Moriscos
Historical milestone
José Folch de Cardona granted in 1609 to new colonists the first settlement charter signed in the lands of Castellón after the expulsion edict, barely weeks after the village had been left empty.
The cocotes of Soneja
Food and drink
Savory tomato flatbreads baked in the village households, alongside coquitos, mantecados and anise and wine rings; the savory cooking revolves around three different versions of the olla.
