Vall de Almonacid
Village
Vall de Almonacid is a municipality in the Alto Palancia, in the province of Castellón, set on the eastern slope of the Sierra de Espadán, on the banks of the Chico river, a tributary of the Palancia, with 284 inhabitants (INE 2025). Of Muslim origin, it was an alquería of the castle of Almonecir called Aír; in 1238 James I gave the castle and its alquerías to the bishop of Barcelona, and the lordship passed to Hernando Díaz, whose daughter united it with that of Segorbe; in 1626, by then under the Ximénez de Urrea family, it gave rise to the marquisate of Almonacir. The municipality is dominated by the castle of Almonecir, a fortress of Andalusi origin dated to the 12th century. In the town centre stands out the church of the Immaculate Conception, of 17th-century Baroque craftsmanship, along with a notable hydraulic heritage of springs, ponds and irrigation channels.
