Algimia de Almonacid
Village
Algimia de Almonacid is a municipality in Alto Palancia, on the western slope of the Sierra de Espadán, with 254 inhabitants and a legally recognised predominance of Spanish. Its name comes from the Arabic al-ǧāmiʿ, "the aljama", and its population is of Muslim origin: it was reconquered by James I in 1238, who that same year granted it to the Bishop of Barcelona, Berenguer de Palou; it later passed, through inheritance and sale, to the ducal house of Cardona, united with the duchy of Segorbe. The Morisco revolt of 1610, sparked by the expulsion order, left the village empty, and it was repopulated by Pedro de Urrea with Christian families from Navarre and Puebla de Arenoso. Its municipal area contains the highest points of the Sierra de Espadán, such as the Rápita peak, at 1,106 metres.
