Geldo
Village
Geldo, in the Alto Palancia comarca (Castellón), is, at barely 0.56 km², the smallest municipality in the province, on the banks of the Palancia river; it has 665 inhabitants (2025) and its town centre stands at 331 m above sea level. It is almost entirely surrounded by the municipal area of Segorbe, except on the side of the Palancia river, where it borders Castellnovo. It began as the Andalusi alquería of Torre de la Selda or Xeldo — a ribat tower, hermitage or mosque located outside the settlement — and after the conquest of James I it passed through the hands of several noble lineages. It preserves the palace of the dukes of Medinaceli, from the 15th century and protected as a cultural asset since 1985, and the church of Our Lady of Mercy, from the 17th century, around which the centre of the village, with its three squares, is arranged.
