What to see and do in Almedíjar

Almedíjar
Village
Almedíjar is a Spanish-speaking municipality of El Alto Palancia, in the province of Castellón, lying entirely within the Sierra de Espadán natural park, on its southern slope, with 288 inhabitants (INE 2025). Of clearly Muslim origin, it was conquered by James I in 1238 and later passed under the domains of the Centelles family; the Morisco population, a majority despite the conquest, staged several revolts until its final defeat at the Battle of Almedíjar in 1528, which put an end to the Valencian Morisco rebellion. After the expulsion of the Moriscos, the Marquis of Quirra granted a settlement charter in 1611 to repopulate the place, then deserted, with families from Jérica and Segorbe. It preserves a historic aqueduct, evidence of the comarca's traditional hydraulic heritage.
Aqueduct of Almedíjar
Monument
Almedíjar, in the Alto Palancia comarca, preserves two aqueducts built in Morisco times, before the expulsion of 1611, to allow irrigation water to cross the ravine and reach the orchards: the Huerta Nueva aqueduct and the Alfara aqueduct, the latter recently restored. They bear witness to the traditional hydraulic heritage built by the Morisco population to extend the municipality's irrigated land.
