The creation of the duchy of Segorbe Historical milestone · Segorbe, El Alto Palancia, Castellón Image of Segorbe, not of the place itself. John II of Aragon raised the city to the head of a duchy in 1469 and named as first duke his nephew Henry of Aragon and Pimentel, then only fourteen years old, known as the Infante Fortuna and son of the turbulent Infante Henry of Aragon, who died in 1445 of wounds from the Battle of Olmedo. The title later passed to the Cardona family and turned Segorbe into a seigneurial court of the Valencian interior; in 1520 Emperor Charles V granted it grandeeship of the first class, one of the most important noble distinctions in Spain. Today it belongs to a minor branch of the House of Medinaceli, whose current holder, resident in Seville, is the nineteenth Duke of Segorbe. 1459 Photo: Columbusalbus (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Segorbe
