What to see and do in Montanejos

Montanejos
Village
Montanejos is a municipality in the Alto Mijares comarca, in the interior of Castellón, famous for the thermal waters of the Fuente de los Baños; it has 649 inhabitants (INE 2025) and the hamlet of La Alquería. Its origin goes back to Muslim times, when the alquería of Muntan as-sufla, “Lower Montán”, existed there; after its inhabitants' revolt against Abu Zayd's conversion to Christianity in 1236, King James I granted the lordship, which included Montán, Montanejos and Arañuel, to Pere Ximénez de Vallterra. After the expulsion in 1609 of the 150 Muslim families who lived there, it was resettled in 1612 by Aragonese colonists, from whom it inherits much of its language and culture. The population, sparse for centuries, reached 1,776 and fell to 400 in 1994, before recovering with tourism.
Spring of los Baños de Montanejos
Nature
A thermal spring that emerges at the foot of a cliff, with an approximate flow of 6,000 litres per minute and a constant temperature of 25°C, with hypothermal effects all year round. It is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection status), within the General Urban Development Plan, under the category of ethnological site of local interest. It is reached from the town of Montanejos by the road towards Puebla de Arenoso, crossing the bridge over the río Mijares; next to the spring there is a parking area, a children's and recreation area, and direct access to the bathing area of the river itself.
Legendary Arab baths of Montanejos
Curiosity
Legend credits the last Almohad governor of Valencia, Zayd Abu Zayd, with building Arab baths beside the Fuente de los Baños for their therapeutic properties.
Festivities of Montanejos
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Montanejos, a town of Castellón in El Alto Mijares of Muslim origin, from when the farmstead of Muntan as-sufla existed. They are held in the first week of September, and it is on the Tuesday of that week that they are dedicated to the Virgen de los Desamparados, with a solemn mass in her hermitage, located in the hamlet of La Alquería a kilometre from the town centre, preceded by a procession in which the image of the Virgin is carried out. The hermitage, from 1669 although remodelled in the 18th century, has a single nave with small side chapels and a main altar presided over by the Virgin, flanked by Saint Joseph and the Immaculate Conception; its Baroque bell tower, with two tiers topped by a small pyramidal roof, displays a base of 17th–18th-century tiles with rosette motifs.
The revolt against Abú Zayd
Historical milestone
The Muslim inhabitants rose in 1236 against their lord Abu Zayd, the former Almohad governor of Valencia converted to Christianity; Pere Ximénez de Vallterra put down the rebellion and received the lordship of the place.
The resettlement charter of Montanejos
Historical milestone
With some hundred and fifty Muslim families expelled in 1609, the Vallterras signed a settlement charter with colonists arriving from Aragon; hence the Castilian speech of the valley as against the Valencian of the coast.
