What to see and do in Cirat

Cirat
Village
Cirat is a municipality in the interior of the province of Castellón, in the comarca of El Alto Mijares, next to the río Mijares, with its town centre at 401 metres above sea level, in a mountainous landscape of ravines and stands of pine, holm oak and oak. It has 220 inhabitants (INE 2025), spread between Cirat itself and the hamlets of El Tormo and El Collado Blanco. It was a Muslim town and, after the reconquest, belonged to the domains of Abu-Zeit until in 1342 the crown sold it to Gonzalo Ximénez de Arenós, incorporating it into the barony of Arenós; in 1628 Philip IV created with it the county of Cirat, granted to the Vilarig family. Its moriscos were forcibly baptised in 1535 and expelled in 1609, causing a decline from which the town would not recover until the end of the 17th century.
Palace of los Condes de Cirat
Monument
The Palace of the Counts of Cirat stands in the centre of the town, in the square known as the plaza Mayor, and is catalogued by generic declaration as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), although it is not registered with the ministry, bearing the identification code 12.08.046-003 in the Generalitat Valenciana's BIC record. Some authors date it to the 14th century, considering that it may stand on the remains of Roman foundations, while others place its construction two centuries later, in the 16th century. Together with the ruins of the castle and the parish church, it forms part of the historical heritage of Cirat.
Hermitage of San Antón de Cirat
Monument
A hermitage in the centre of Cirat, part of the local architectural heritage along with the palace of the Counts of Cirat and the remains of the castle.
Bride's Leap of Cirat
Nature
A waterfall and natural pool in a rocky amphitheatre in the municipal district of Cirat, whose name refers to a local legend about a young couple separated by war.
The creation of the county of Cirat
Historical milestone
Philip IV created the county and granted it to the Vilarig family; the place, sold in 1342 to Gonzalo Ximénez de Arenós, had been left almost empty after the forced baptism of 1535 and the expulsion of 1609.
