What to see and do in Fuentes de Ayódar

Fuentes de Ayódar
Village
Fuentes de Ayódar is a municipality of El Alto Mijares, in the province of Castellón, with 98 inhabitants, next to the rambla de Ayódar, at 505 m above sea level, on the foothills of the Sierra de Espadán natural park. It initially belonged to the Moorish king of Valencia Zayd Abu Zayd as one of the four villages of the Barony of Ayódar; after the expulsion of the moriscos in 1609, it was repopulated with families from Godella under the 1611 settlement charter. It preserves a flour mill from the morisco period with a 15th-century mill pond and the parish church of San Roque, Baroque in style, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, which suffered attacks during the Civil War that destroyed its side altars. In its municipal area are also the Cueva de los Judíos and the Pozo Negro, a bathing area in summer.

Mill pond of Fuentes de Ayódar
Monument
The flour mill of Morisco-era origin in Fuentes de Ayódar, with its 15th-century mill pond, is one of the municipality's most distinctive heritage features. Its exact date of construction is unknown, although the Carta-Puebla (founding charter) of 1611 already refers to it, confirming its existence from at least that time.
Church of San Roque de Fuentes de Ayódar
Monument
The church of San Roque, in the centre of Fuentes de Ayódar (Alto Mijares region, Castellón), is a Baroque church built between the 17th and 18th centuries. It is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection category), published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado of 10 March 2009. In August 1936, during the fighting of the Civil War in the area, its interior suffered severe damage: the altars and images were destroyed and it was left with no decoration at all. Restoration work began in 1938, and over the course of the 20th century the church gradually regained the appearance it retains today, in the centre of the town.
